Archeologists uncover 3,700-year-old wall
Archaeologists digging in Jerusalem have uncovered a 3,700-year-old wall that is the oldest example of massive fortifications ever found in the city, the Israel Antiquities Authority said Wednesday.

The 26-foot-high wall is believed to have been part of a protected passage built by ancient Canaanites from a hilltop fortress to a nearby spring that was the city’s only water source and vulnerable to marauders. The discovery shows that Jerusalem of the Middle Bronze Age had a powerful population capable of complex building project.

On Monday, a group of 71 senators that includes senior leaders from both parties sent a letter to President Barack Obama on Monday to press Arab states to recommit to peace with Israel.

The effort, led by Sens. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho), is being promoted and circulated by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and comes two months after Obama’s June 4 speech in Cairo.

As Jewish Baltimoreans, we should THANK SENATORS CARDIN AND MIKULSKI FOR SIGNING THE LETTER. How can you do that?

U.S., Israel wrangle over east Jerusalem building
The U.S. has told Israel to halt an east Jerusalem construction project, siding with some members of the international community who hold east Jerusalem to be a settlement. Israel captured and annexed east Jerusalem in 1967.

NetanyahuPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded, stating Israel can build anywhere in Jerusalem. He told his Cabinet over the weekend that Israel’s sovereignty over all of Jerusalem is “indisputable.”

“We cannot accept the fact that Jews wouldn’t be entitled to live and buy anywhere in Jerusalem,” he said.

Israeli Cellcom commercial sparks controversy

A new Cellcom commercial shows Israeli troops patrolling alongside the West Bank security fence. … BOOM – a soccer ball crashes atop the hood of the IDF armored jeep. The soldiers, alarmed, exit the car. When they discover the “weapon,” they kick it back over the fence. Pause … the ball returns.

The soldiers jump on their cellular phones and call the “chevra,” their soldier buddies. A lively game of soccer ensues … between the Israelis on one side and what is assumed to be the Palestinians on the other.

A Facebook group is trying to get Cellcom to pull the TV commercial. They argue that it’s “racist.” The story first ran in Ha’aretz over the weekend. It was picked up this week by the Washington Post.
