The Tzofim Israel Scouts were here June 28-July 1 for another season of song, dance and fun. The Scouts visited one very unique location this year, Charlestown Community. The senior community is largely non-Jewish and the Tzofim were a unique treat.
Shirley Parker who lives in Charlestown contacted the Baltimore Zionist District to set up the Israel Scout performance. BZD sponsors the scouts’ trip to Baltimore each year. Parker said she was very impressed by the Scouts and she could tell from the audience the program was a huge success.
“I thought it was delightful,” said resident Martha Yeager. “I’ve never seen anything like it before. It was nice to see so many clapping, participating in the program.”
“They have so much energy, they are just so alive,” said resident Trish Aiken.
Said resident Susie Blatt: “I thought it was great!”
After their performance at Charlestown, the scouts traveled to various camps across the area, including Camps Airy and Louise where the campers went wild for the Scouts psychedelic shirts and vibrant music.
“It was the best performance we ever had,” said one of the Scouts when she returned at midnight from Camp Louise. “There was such a great energy.”
On Wednesday night, July 1, the Scouts had their final Baltimore performance, hitting the stage at Beth Tfiloh for an audience of 500. The Scouts performed for an entire hour, with an eclectic array of songs and dance. Their tunes and moves were a fusion of German, Russian, American, Ethiopian, French and other cultures.
As audience members were leaving, the theatre was abuzz with upbeat chatter. Folks bought CDs, T-shirts and schmoozed with the Scouts.
The Baltimore Zionist District has one goal, said President Loryn Lesser during her introductory remarks, to educate, advocate and link the local community with Israel. The feeling in the room was that the Tzofim accomplished that goal.
